Day 1- Spring Break

So today was my first day working/volunteering at The ABA Place in Bartlett, TN. The ABA Place is a non-profit organization that serves children with autism and other related developmental disorders.

I loved my day today. I know that this is the type of work that I am called to do, and it was so great to be back doing it again. I got to implement about 30 minutes of therapy with two boys (under supervision of course) during a group therapy session. We worked on peer interactions and verbal exchanges with one another, two of the skills that I feel are MOST important when working with autistic children. I surprised myself with how unafraid I was to jump in and ask if I could work with the boys, and I was surprised at how easily I could come up with activities for the three of us to do that would help them reach their goals and work on the specific areas that they each need addressed. I guess I know more than I think I do. I'm starting to really see the benefits of my internship in Charlotte. Every technique I am using came from there.

I still have A LOT to learn, and I am grateful for opportunities like these. It will help me as a student clinician in graduate school (hopefully!) and as a professional later in life.

Unfortunately, I cannot take pictures of the children for my own use, but for pictures of the day, visit their Facebook page. You can find it by clicking HERE. There is an album entitled Spring Break Camp 2011.

Day 2 starts at 9 AM...
